I started learning how to cook when I was in middle school. At first it was just simple dishes from my mother. Other cooking experiences came from baking cookies with my nana and trying to get the recipes for my big Nana's pies and fried chicken. My Big Nana's recipes were more challenging because she never measured anything out with "standard" cooking tools. Her experience allowed her to measure things by sight or with her hands. Being someone that is interested in doing things precisely this drove me crazy. I had to go back behind her and remeasure what she had just put in the bowl. Needless to say I wrote these recipes down the best I could.
Then for a long time I lost interest.
Maybe it was having to cook for myself in college and not having much time. Maybe it was my awesome husband cooking for us leading me to believe that I didn't need to work on these skills anymore.
Now my desire to cook and learn is back! I can't tolerate any lactose but my love for food has led me to experiment with alternative ingredients. My degree in nutrition science has helped me try and make good food choices, even though sometimes I disregard the healthy eating tips I learned.
This will be my venue to share my cooking successes and failures as I experiment. I've named it after my great Grandmother (i.e. - Big Nana) who owned a restaurant in Kentucky called Evvie's Eat Shop. I hope to be as good as her someday so join me and let's get cooking!
